The Three Roof

The Three Roof is a house in Okinawa, Japan. Traditional Okinawan houses use long eaves to reduce subtropical heat, but deep eaves also block daylight and darken the interior. The roof is divided into three parts, so daylight enters from the north side and air passes through the house more easily. The split roof gives each area a suitable ceiling height and creates variety in the space. A pillarless space of 4.0 meters is provided under the low eaves and can be used flexibly. The building is made of reinforced concrete with exposed concrete walls.

Daiichi

Daiichi is a hospital building located in Himeji City, Japan. The seven-story structure replaces an older block and holds one hundred beds. A porous facade is treated as a thin sheet and repeated in several layers, which gives the building depth and softens the heavy image often linked to hospital architecture. The layered corner responds to the angular shape of the site and marks the main entrance. White surfaces are used to suggest cleanliness and to calm patients. A grid of metal beams and pillars supports the building and meets strict earthquake safety rules.

Beach Cabin on the Baltic Sea

This small diner on a Baltic Sea beach near Gdansk with its simple form fits naturally into the beach environment. The building offers two areas: an opaque part with windows and a fully glazed winter garden. The transparent glass house not only offers an unrestricted view of the sea and the beach but also uses solar energy in a passive way to improve indoor comfort in a relatively cool climate in northern Poland. The Solarlux system construction of the winter garden with its slim wood-aluminum profiles enables a filigree effect.

37 Interactive Entertainment HQ

37 Interactive Entertainment HQ is a high-rise headquarters building in China. Modules are used across the plan and the elevation, which reduces construction time and cost while keeping the quality of the work. Office modules, conference modules and event modules are arranged within a standard rectangular space, and their number and position can be changed on typical floors. A modular facade system responds to the climate of the Lingnan region. The shading pattern is denser on the east side than on the west, so natural light is kept while solar radiation and energy use are reduced.

Jiangnan No.1 Courtyard

Jiangnan No.1 Courtyard is an exhibition hall located at Xiaoshan Innovation Polis in Hangzhou, China. The building stands next to a lake, and the setting recalls a Jiangnan watery town. Herringbone sloping roofs, white walls and black tiles form a continuous and rhythmic image. The interior is organized around a landscape atrium with a light well, following the spirit of the traditional courtyard. Natural light enters the rooms through the atrium glass. The entrance uses imitation wood poles that form a semi-transparent screen.

Skyboat

Skyboat is a two-storey building set above a 613 metre deep sinkhole in Leye, China. Hotel rooms are placed on the ground floor, a cafe on the first floor and a viewing platform on the roof. The platform includes a walk-on glass floor measuring 10 by 12.5 metres. The building spans the narrow passageway at the top of the sinkhole and cantilevers 34 metres and 22 metres to each side of the mountain ridge. A low centre of gravity allows the structure to balance itself. Only five supports are used, which limits damage to the local plants.
