Involve Factory and Office

Involve

Involve is a factory and office building located in Nisshin, Aichi, Japan. The plan follows an equiangular spiral, also called a logarithmic spiral. The spiral layout guides workers along curved paths, so contact between colleagues happens often. The frequent contact is intended to improve quality and productivity. The spiral geometry also allows columns, beams and cross bracing to repeat the same connection details, and only the length of each member changes. The building sits on a hill like a stone sculpture, and new trees recall the forest that once covered the site.

A cantilevered structure and slender metal pilotis allow the units to rest on the ground at different heights. The two units share service areas on the ground floor and offer different ways of living. The dry construction uses natural and recyclable materials, including exposed coloured concrete, larch wood and pre-oxidised zinc-titanium sheet.

The enclosed courtyards bring soft daylight indoors and blur the boundary between inside and outside. The structure is built entirely of timber, following a traditional Japanese method.
